AHU: what it’s used for

The Air Handling Unit (often referred to by the acronym AHU) is a complex device used in all activities that, due to operational requirements, need to control air conditions and parameters such as temperature and humidity.

USI Italia AHUs therefore modify the chemical-physical parameters of the air before channelling it into the aeraulic circuit of the painting facility and play a fundamental role in terms of indoor air quality and working comfort.

The USI Italia AHUs are made up of several devices, each of which plays a key role in ensuring correct operation and consequently air quality and quality of finish.

They are generally composed of:

  • Outer casing in galvanised sheet metal
  • Supply and extraction fans
  • Class G4 synthetic flat filters
  • Pressure transducer and inverter for adjusting the air flow and flow rate
  • Water batteries with galvanised steel droplet separator and PVC plastic fins
  • By-pass system for the air handling unit: allows free-cooling in the intermediate seasons, making the best use of the free external heat inputs.
  • Humidity detection sensors in the booth, the air handling unit and the air intake pipe.
  • Temperature detection sensors
  • A humidification section (when necessary)
  • A cross-flow heat recovery unit (optional, but generally always recommended to reduce the delta T of the incoming air).

USI Italia AHUs are specifically designed to minimise energy consumption during operation.
The heat recovery system and the innovative adiabatic humidification system allow the air to be brought to the desired conditions in the booth with the minimum expenditure of energy.

USI Italia engineers are able to guarantee the correct operating efficiency of AHUs thanks to the expertise acquired over the years by developing the appropriate sizing of both the machine (and therefore the correct air flow rates and speeds) and the ducting system.

These energy-intensive air treatment systems should always be equipped with cross-flow heat recovery systems, thus reducing energy demand.
