What an evaporative cooling humidifier is used for

The USI Italia energy-efficient humidification and cooling system was created in response to two fundamental requirements which need to be met during an application process in a painting facility:

  • The need to ensure a relative humidity level appropriate to the paint application process (generally in the range of 40 to 60%)
  • The need to lower the temperature inside the application site and create better working conditions

Evaporative cooling, better known as adiabatic cooling, is a natural phenomenon and takes place when water is absorbed by the air and evaporates, causing the air temperature to drop.

The USI Italia humidification kit is therefore integrated in the air inlet duct between the thermo-ventilating unit and the application booth and consists of:

  • A reinforced, yet easily serviceable stainless steel frame
  • Non-combustible evaporative pads with a low pressure drop (since they allow air to pass through the panel at high speed without encountering excessive resistance) and which can be replaced laterally.
  • A humidity sensor
  • Software specially designed by USI Italia for the intelligent regulation of the solenoid valve (which releases water onto the buffers and through which the air that will then enter the booth passes).

If we consider the fact that the evaporation of water into air requires energy (0.68 kW per litre of evaporated water) we can see that a humidification system represents a viable alternative to expensive air conditioning systems and therefore, is an efficient way to remove excess heat and reducing operating costs; all simply through the use of water.

The advantages of an adiabatic cooling system can be summarised as follows:

  • Lower energy costs compared to electric cooling
  • Short amortisation period
  • Low maintenance and quick as it can be cleaned on site
  • Low operating costs
  • Sustainability
  • No water treatment required, with tolerated of pH levels 3-10

Even though this cooling method still relatively unknown, it has great potential and will be used more and more in the future.

USI Italia’s customers who install cooling and humidification systems in painting facilities are mainly active in the car refinishing sector, but we have also completed several installations for the naval and aeronautical sectors.

Contact USI Italia for more information on how to save costs with adiabatic cooling in both small and industrial painting facilities.
